Brighton seafront

In this family friendly ride along the seafront of Brighton, Cycling UK's Infrastructure Campaigns officer, Tom Guha, gives us a route where history was made on autumn afternoon.

The start of this route is where the Labour Party committed to spend at least £10 per head on cycling and walking if elected to Government. The announcement took place at a rally, organised by Cycling UK, at which we were calling on the party and its MPs to back the Space for Cycling campaign.

In a speech at the rally, Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, Andy McDonald, said, “Our country is blighted by illegal air pollution, crippling congestion and a public health crisis. Cycling and walking can holistically address all these issues in an efficient, cost-effective way. Labour is committed to ensuring that potential is met and is committed to revolutionising our transport system through cycling and walking."

The announcement was a landmark one from the party and was met with cheers from the crowd, which included several Labour members of the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group.

We chose this route to ride along because it is entirely segregated from the main carriageway. It is safe and comfortable to ride along, although the track does get quite squeezed at points. The route was short enough that MPs and conference delegates were able to join us without having to take too much time out of their busy conference schedules but substantial and pleasant enough that a number of local residents joined us after a busy working day.

While suitable for political rides, it's also an ideal and straightforward route for families visiting Brighton as it extends along the whole of Brighton's seafront.
