The Cycling UK Board of Trustees is the body elected by you, the members, to take Cycling UK forward and ensure that what we do benefits cycling.

Dan Howard lives in Staffordshire and has been a trustee since 2012. He has a background in ICT management and leadership and currently works as a deputy head of Information Management and Technology for an NHS trust. He cycles for transport, to spend leisure time with friends and to explore new places. He enjoys Audax, time trialling, commuting and touring.
Janet Atherton
Janet Atherton
Janet Atherton lives in the Wirral and has been a trustee since 2017. She has been a Director of Public Health in both the NHS and local government and has recently retired as senior adviser to Public Health England. She continues to work as an associate with the Leadership Centre and is a director of her own consultancy. She returned to cycling at 50 and riding with a local Cycling UK group really helped build her confidence. She now leads rides with Wirral Bicycle Belles and loves organising their trips away.

Paul Baker lives in Aylsham, Norfolk and has been a trustee since 2019. He is a TV Producer, making documentary and current affairs programmes at the BBC, and has held several leadership roles in the organisation.  He has been a regular cyclist since he was a child and cycles now for fun, fitness and as a means of transport. He enjoys commuting, touring, off-road touring, mountain biking and road cycling.

Melanie Carroll lives in Lincoln and has been a trustee since 2019. She owns a bookshop and is also a freelance Bikeability and Adult Cycle Instructor. She is Campaigns Officer for the Cycling UK Lincolnshire member branch, a ride leader for the Cycling UK Lincoln Women’s Group and an active local campaigner. She has always been passionate about cycling, particularly for transport and leisure but volunteering has made her passionate about speaking up and sharing her love of cycling with others.

Christine Gibbons lives in Hove in East Sussex and has been a trustee since 2019. She is retired but was a pharmacist and an executive board director in the NHS. She is an unpaid trustee of a number of national and local charities in the health and leisure sectors. She started cycling in her mid-30s but has since ridden the CTC tour of Land’s End to John o’Groats and taken up triathlons. Her next challenge is to try off-road cycling.
Jacqueline Hills
Jacqueline Hills lives in Quorn, Leicestershire and has been a trustee since 2018. She has experience as a senior executive in several international organisations from insurance to telecoms and digital retail. Her core strength is in legal, corporate governance, risk and corporate responsibility. As a child she cycled to see friends in other villages; as an adult she cycled to see more of the UK. She now cycles for fitness and enjoyment with friends. She has ridden from London to Paris, Newcastle to Edinburgh and completed the Prudential Ride 200.

Julian Huppert
Julian Huppert from Cambridge has been a trustee since 2017. He runs a centre at Jesus College, Cambridge, getting people to think and talk about a very wide range of issues. He is the former MP for Cambridge who co-chaired the All-Party Parliamentary Cycling Group and led the 'Get Britain Cycling' inquiry and report. He was the winner of Brake's Road Safety award for campaigning and in 2014 was named in the BikeBiz list for being influential. Cycling is Julian's main form of transport, but he likes longer rides too including a 200km ride around Cambridgeshire and a trip from Glasgow to the Orkneys.

Andy Key lives in Winchester and has been a trustee since 2018. He has a background in IT, online services, retail and local government, and runs a small cycling holiday company. He also works at a social enterprise encouraging more people to cycle and is a Cycling UK local campaigner and committee member of his local Cycling UK member group, Winchester CTC. Andy has been cycling for as long as he can remember, using his various bikes for commuting, shopping trips, touring, evening and weekend rides with friends, and some off-road.

Rachel Kirkwood lives in Bidford on Avon, Warwickshire and has been a trustee since 2017. She is the Strategic Lead for Allied Health Professions at an NHS Trust in Warwickshire She enjoys cycle touring, mountain biking and occasional triathlons. While Rachel is a ride leader for her local clubs  she is known for supporting new riders develop cycle confidence and skills.

Carl Pearse
Carl Pearse lives in Beckenham, Kent and has been a trustee since 2018. He has a First Class degree, and MBA and more than 20 years experience in Information Technology. He owns and delivers digital strategies in growing organisations, working closely with a wide variety of people, from boards to end users. Carl loves all types of cycling, including road, mountain, touring, commuting and lots more.

Andy MacNae lives in Lancashire and has been a trustee since 2019. He is the CEO of an adventure sports consultancy and sits on several commercial and public sector boards. He is also a district councillor and was National Officer of the British Mountaineering Council. He enjoys mountain biking in his local quarries and big days out on the hilly roads near his home.
