Audlem and Whitegate in Cheshire

Here is an easier alternative in Cheshire to the White Peak Grimpeur in Derbyshire, if the ride through the Peak District sounds a bit too strenuous.

This is a pleasant 75-mile ride across the county, using quiet lanes with traffic-free bridleways at Somerford and the Whitegate Way. There's a chance to admire the pennyfarthing collection in Knutsford.  Watch out for deer as you cycle through Tatton Park!  This is a  gently undulating route (meaning there are no big hills!).

As an Audax "Perm" ride, you start at Dean Row petrol station, with free car parking available from a near-by layby just by the Deanwater Hotel.  As a Cycling UK ride, you could start/finish at Wilmslow railway station or from Whitegate near Winsford.

The first leg of 25 miles to Radway Green passes Mottram St Andrew and Siddington to cross the Dane Valley at Somerford using a popular bridleway.  No heroics at Siddington ford please; the pedestrian footbridge comes highly recommended!  There is a cafe stop at Radway Green, at either Hall Farm or the Garden Centre.

The next leg is 20 miles skirting Crewe and Sandbach to reach Winsford and the rather rude sounding Bottom Flash. Don't worry, it's just a lake! Then it's onto the Whitegate Way for a traffic-free ride to Cuddington.  There are no trains these days at Whitegate Station but there is a cafe.  There's also a car park, offering an alternative start/finish.  At Cuddington, there is an excellent bakery if you need to top up your cake levels. There are also trains to Wilmslow (change at Stockport) if you think you've done enough at this point.

The next leg of 15 miles reaches Knutsford via the historic Anderton Canal Lift outside Northwich, which is probably worth a look, and the picturesque village of Great Budworth, another photo-opportunity.  At Knutsford, why not stop for tea and cake from the Pennyfarthing Cafe?  You can here admire their "ordinary" bicycles (as they are more correctly known) commemorating Knutsford's hosting of the Great Race, a ten-yearly race for Ordinaries, next due to be held in 2020.

The final leg of 15 miles contrasts Tatton Deer Park, then the cycle tunnels underneath the Manchester Airport runaways to reach Dean Row for a drink at the Unicorn public house.
