Calling all bike recycling centres: CTC’s Big Bike Revival gets £1 million green light from government

Today, CTC is celebrating the ministerial announcement of the national cycling charity’s government-funded Big Bike Revival. The project will help people to fix their bikes and bring cycling back into the day to day lives of tens of thousands of people.
Ahead of a targeted two-week long festival of events (23 May – 7 June), CTC aims to shine a light on the fantastic work of bike recycle centres across the country, calling on all centres to join this growing national network. The Big Bike Revival will catalyse 50,000 people into making the shift from car to bike.

CTC Chief Executive Paul Tuohy said:

“As the national cycling charity, CTC wants to encourage as many people as possible to fall back in love with cycling and experience all the health and economic benefits it brings.

“Knowing so many bikes are lying dormant gathering dust in people’s homes, the Big Bike Revival aims to bring them back to life and give people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities the incentive they need to re-engage with cycling.

“The minister’s backing is a sign of the level of importance that the Department for Transport is placing on getting people back into the saddle, for which we are enormously grateful.”

Ahead of the two-week festival the national cycling charity is building its database of participating centres, by encouraging bike recycling centres to sign up to this funded promotional opportunity.

Working with these centres, which recycle second-hand bikes to get them back on the road, CTC also aims to give these people the know-how to fix and maintain their bikes themselves, and a boost to support them back into the saddle.

The Big Bike Revival got our name out there to quite a few people who weren't aware of us. This has meant an increase in the number of people contacting us – whether for a bike, parts or to get some work done on their bikes.”

Notes to editors

CTC, the national cycling charity, inspires and helps people to cycle and keep cycling, whatever kind of cycling they do or would like to do. Over a century’s experience tells us that cycling is more than useful transport; it makes you feel good, gives you a sense of freedom and creates a better environment for everyone.

  • We provide expert, practical help and advice.
  • We support individuals and communities.
  • We protect cyclists’ interests.
  • We campaign to make cycling mainstream and to remove the things that stop people cycling.
  • We help people develop the confidence and skills to cycle.
  • We promote the benefits of cycling to individuals, to society and to the economy.
