Welcome to new Cycling UK members in the Exeter area

To all members who have recently joined Cycling UK in the Exeter area

It is a real pleasure to see that so many new members have recently joined Cycling UK in the Exeter area in the past twelve months. Over and above the benefits of membership of Cycling UK as a national organisation, I would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to some of the activities organised here in Exeter at the local level.

Thursday BikeBus

Every Thursday, we arrange group rides from two starting points: The Piazza Terracina on the Quay in Exeter and West Hill. The destinations vary from week to week, usually involving up to 15 or 20 miles before reaching the coffee stop. The rides take place at a leisurely pace, making sure that no one gets left behind. Full information, including the list of destinations, can be found on the Exeter CTC pages of the Cycling UK website. Please also use this website to book individual rides:  https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/thursday-bike-bus-calendar%3F1%3Da

Sunday rides

There are usually two rides every Sunday morning, mostly starting from the Quay in Exeter. Occasionally, another starting point will be chosen.

‘A’ rides are usually 35 to 60 miles and take place at a reasonably fast pace.

‘B’ rides are normally between 25 and 40 miles, at a more relaxed pace.

As with the Thursday BikeBus, details about upcoming Sunday rides and a booking form can be found on the club’s website: https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/sunday-bike-bus-calendar%3F1%3Da

Other activities

From time, to time, the club organises various social activities and occasional training sessions. In the autumn, we normally have a curry evening, with invited speakers giving talks on a wide range of topics. Recent topics included a three-month ride across America, and another talked about Vätternrundan, a 200-mile ride around the second largest lake in Sweden.

Recent training sessions have covered bike maintenance and we hope to be able to offer a first-aid course later this year.

The Annual General Meeting is usually held in April. Apart from the formalities, there are normally one or more invited speakers here too. This year, we heard from a Devon-based ultra-endurance cyclist about his experiences in a range of events and from the head of a local charity promoting access to cycling.

There is a great deal happening in our club and we would be delighted to see more members out on our organised rides. Please do keep an eye on our website, which is regularly updated with information on forthcoming rides: https://www.cyclinguk.org/local-groups/exeter

If you need any further information, please contact Ian Grundberg, our Club Secretary on ctc@grundberg.org

I look forward to seeing you out very soon on one of our rides – please join us!

Kind regards
