Welcome to Burnley & Pendle CTC's new quarterly newsletter.
We're hoping to send this newsletter out once a quarter to all Cycling UK members in the Burnley & Pendle area.
You probably already know we live in a fantastic area for cycling, with easy access to the Yorkshire Dales, Forest of Bowland and the Ribble Valley, but did you know, as members of Cycling UK, that you have access to a countrywide network of local member groups and are welcome to join them on any of their regular rides?
Every weekend, Burnley & Pendle CTC offers a choice of rides seeking out quiet country lanes with stops to socialise in cafes and village tearooms. We also offer short tours throughout the year in the UK and occasionally overseas. We have a 'Beginners' ride on the first Saturday of every month. There is also a midweek daytime ride every Tuesday evening, and once a month on Thursdays. Details of all our rides and other activities can be found on our website.

The Bay Cycleway is a stunning long distance route around Morecambe Bay, one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the UK. The route runs from the south west coast of Cumbria to Glasson Dock in Lancashire.
Four riders set out from Walney Island on a dampish Wednesday morning, but didn’t take long for the sun to shine and waterproofs were quickly removed.
Cycling through the dock area was really interesting, past BAE System's huge buildings and ships in the docks before heading inland through Rampside, Roosebeck, Leece and Gleaston and a great descent with fabulous views of the Bay onto Bardsea. Onwards past the fabulous Buddhist Temple on the way into Ulverston for lunch in a lovely little bistro.
Our base for this year's spring weekend was the Caravan Site and Premier Inn adjacent to Nene Park, Ferry Meadows, on the outskirts of Peterborough.
Setting out from the Hotel at 9:30am on Saturday morning we collected the caravanners and then made our way west out of the park on the cycle track parallel to the railway. There were nine riders out today, keeping together for our first full day in the area.
After leaving the track, we headed out on smooth roads through Ailsworth, Ufford and Stamford before dropping down to the north shore of Rutland Water, one of the largest manmade lakes in Europe.
Five teams from local cycling clubs gathered in Boyces Barrel in Colne for this years annual quiz night.
As is tradition, last years winners had the enviable task of being this years question setters, and Pendle Forrest really gave us a challenging night, starting with a picture round, identifying famous people on their bikes - none of whom were actually cyclists!.
Then followed six question rounds, on various subjects: general knowledge, history, and a hidden connection round, where all the answers had a common theme.
You've read about some of our weekend trips above, but we're also out every Sunday on our local lanes.
Sunday 2nd of June was no exception, and despite the poor forecast, four riders set out from Longridge for the "short" ride to Roots cafe in Catforth. As it turned out, Blackburn and District CTC also had Roots in mind for their ride, so we joined them for lunch.
Roots is one of our favourite cafe stops, a true cycling cafe, always full of riders from all over Lancashire.
We also found time on the way back to stop for a brew at Faith's Farm, a relatively new cafe, only having opened earlier this year, at the junction of Delph Lane and Bleasdale Lane.
Overall, there were only had a few light showers, and we had a good day in the saddle.
Two of our members joined Barnoldswick Clarion and several other groups for the Harry Hill memorial ride.
The photo shows the riders congregating at Harry 'Pop' Hill's bench at Bracewell which should be a familiar spot for most riders in the vicinity. They then rode on to the Clarion house for the Clarion Sunday bike meet.
