Merryhatton Garden Centre

Group ride
Description

The ride on Sunday 9th June is a 65 K (40-mile) relaxed loop of East Lothian.  Please meet at Musselburgh Harbour at 9:50am for a prompt 10am start.

Due to the rather unpredictable weather (and unsettled forecast) the intention will be to  have lunch inside, at Merryhatton Garden Centre (39K).  I have reserved a table.

There are WCs at the start of the ride.  We will have the option of a comfort stop at Haddington (29K), although as it is only another 10K to lunch stop we may decide to just bypass Haddington and head straight to Merryhatton.

Our route will start at Musselburgh Harbour and follow the Esk path to Whitecraig when we will then follow B roads through Elphinston, New Winton and then on to Haddington where we have the option of a comfort break.  From there we will cross the A1, and head to East Fortune and the Merryhatton Garden Centre for lunch.  Afterwards we will loop back on minor roads to Athelstaneford, and then a fairly straight run to the level crossing at Seton Mains, through Preston Pans, before looping round the John Muir Way back to the start point.

The route is mostly B roads, with two sections of good cycle path that will be suitable for all road bikes.  There are some recent re-surfaced roads just after Haddington that still have a lot of loose gravel so we will need to be careful with that part of the route.

As mentioned, the forecast is stating that weather is “unsettled” up to and including the weekend, so come prepared for some rain – but I am certainly hoping the sunshine will have returned by Sunday.

I have attached the .GPX file for uploading to Garmins etc, and there is a map and elevation profile below.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING:

Riding in a group requires consideration for others in the group. Our riding guidelines are essential reading prior to coming out on the ride to ensure safety for yourself and the other riders.  https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/guidelines-safe-riding

At any turns, make sure the person behind sees you. Please take note of my phone number 07964 988 597in case you get separated from the group. Please ensure your bike is roadworthy, and that you carry 2 spare inner tubes and tools.

In accordance with good riding practice you should carry emergency contact details both on your person (card in wallet/purse, ICE on mobile) and in your bike bag.

While experienced group members will always give assistance and advice to other riders ultimately you are responsible for yourself and making your own way home.

An attendance sheet will be completed on the morning. The ride is primarily for Cycling UK members.  However non-members are welcome to attend, but would be expected to join Cycling UK after 3 rides.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Regards

Ian
