What are your cycling ambitions? Creating a cycling bucket list

Having turned 40, I reflect that I’ve spent half my time cycling - the rest of the time was wasted…

Having ticked off track, PBs in time trials, mountain biking, road racing, the Etape du Tour, all with much enjoyment, yet dubious results, I’ve decided that the time is now to write my cycling ‘bucket list’ – my personal cycling must-dos before the wheels inevitably turn more slowly. Here they are:

1.       Improve my downhill riding skills- off-road and on road

2.       Go on a weekend wild touring with my sons

3.       Get slim enough to justify buying a Rapha jersey

4.       Do the Land's End to John o’Groats tour, tasting local beers

5.       Build my own steel bike frame

6.       Do The Tour Divide - a 2745 mile off-road route from Banff in Canada to New Mexico

7.       Do the cycle pilgrimage along the Camino Santiago

8.       Ride the Stelvio Pass in Italy

9.       Learn to unicycle/do a wheelie/track stand

10.     Finally break in a Brooks saddle

What's on your cycling bucket list?

Great idea! Here's a few of mine:

• Ride the Paris-Roubaix cobbles
• Win a rainbow Jersey (World track Master over 70’s category 2040 here I come!)
• Complete the lap of Mallorca in a day
• Learn to dirt jump
• Learn to build wheels
• Have the perfect garage/shed

I have broken in a Brooks saddle.
My bucket list is rather short but
1 : Ride from USA to the tip of South America
2 : Ride the Trans Am at 80 years old in 2018.
3: Live long enough to do 1 and 2 above

Superb.
at 71 I'm downsizing a little but here goes
make steady progress towards 400,000 miles (8000 in 2014 would be OK)
at least one 100 mile ride this year
keep getting out 3/4 times a week

and I'm increasingly aware of what we can do together, so:
continue to do my bit:
to ensure that the Seamons remains the best cycling club in the country;
to maintain and improve Sustrans routes in the area;
to make cycling safer, more attractive and more popular in the area.

Nothing like a bucket list to focus the mind and a public declaration to help make it happen! We've done 2, 4, and 7 with the kids, great journeys, especially Santiago.

And I love the daisy1938 spirit... to do the TransAm at 80.. brilliant. Before my legs stop turning I want to ride the Wild Atlantic Way, cross America or Canada, revisit South America. I'd also love to learn some off road skills for some wild backcountry touring.

1 For my 60th birthday doing Fred Whitton challenge in May this year
2 Ireland end 2 end ride
3 Tour round the coast line of UK
4 Do a summer training camp in Tenerife
5 For my 70th cycle Chicago 2 La route 66
6 Keep enjoying life on 2 wheels life begins at 60 retirement.

Great list. May I add the following?

1. L’Eroica.

2. Riding traffic free in the Netherlands.

3. Exploring a Euro Velo route.

4. Touring unhurriedly through France on back roads.

5. Riding all the Nick Cotton routes in S. E. England.

Best Wishes,

Scott Williams.
