Karen Gee

Karen Gee is part of Cycling UK's 100 Women in Cycling 2019 list for being the founder and editor of Cycle Sprog, a website dedicated to promoting family cycling.

For Karen Gee, what started out as a couple of articles has grown over seven years into Cycle Sprog, one of the leading resources for parents wanting advice on cycling with their children.

Cycle Sprog has also gone from being a small hobby to the family business. Together with her husband Chris and their two sons, they review the latest kids bikes and share their cycling adventures.

They also encourage more girls to cycle by showcasing what fun Cycle Sprog’s readers’ daughters have on their bikes, and they host a ‘Sprog Blog’ to encourage children to write about their cycling, and give them the satisfaction of seeing their writing published online.

Aside from Cycle Sprog, Karen contributes freelance articles about family cycling for organisations such as Cycling UK, Sustrans and British Cycling.

And in her spare time, as well as riding with her family, Karen is kept very busy volunteering for the Go-Ride section of Kendal Cycle Club, which in just three years has grown into a thriving club with more than 70 children riding every week.

Our aim is to inspire as many families as possible to cycle together.

Karen said: “Cycling has been my main mode of transport since I was about 14 years of age, and when I became a mum I naturally wanted to keep cycling with my two young boys.

“Frustrated at the lack of easily understandable, trustworthy information on how to safely transport toddlers by bike, I decided to set up a website detailing what I found to help other parents.

“Our aim is to inspire as many families as possible to cycle together. Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I realise our little website isn’t so little anymore and now gets over 800,000 page views per year!

“I love cycling because it always brings a smile to my face. Whether I’m commuting to work, mountain biking with the boys, road riding with my friends from the cycle club, or getting muddy racing cyclo-cross, I never fail to experience the feel-good endorphins!”

Karen was nominated for 100 Women in Cycling by a number Cycle Sprog readers.

“Karen is really helpful, writes great blogs, and is always encouraging families to get on their bikes,” said one.

Another said: “What she has done to promote family cycling through Cycle Sprog is amazing.”

And another said: “Karen is the powerhouse behind the comprehensive guide to family cycling which is the Cycle Sprog website. She's generous with her time and advice and passionate about promoting all aspects of cycling, including campaigning for better infrastructure.”
