Are you up for Cycling UK's 2020 bikepacking challenge?

Cycling UK is encouraging everyone to get out and enjoy a night out under the stars at least once a month over 2020 – are you up for the challenge?

Spending time outdoors, in nature and in the green space is a well-know tonic to modern day life. The break from the screens and their constant clamour for attention as you take time out in the slow lane is well documented for the benefits it brings your mental wellbeing.

Cycling UK is therefore encouraging us all to seek these benefits while also combining it with our favourite physical activity: cycling.

Throughout 2020, the national cycling charity wants to see as many people as possible out and about and sharing their adventures on Twitter or Instagram using #12nightsoutin1year.

To help provide an incentive, each month there will be an award for the best picture summing up their overnight adventures.

In February, winner of one of Restrap's top notch medium frame bags (rrp £54.99) was Instagram's cal_ofthewild whose tale of snow, bothies and puppy rescuing in the Scottish borders impressed the judges as much as his photographic story. There was a bit of a snow in the borders theme, as helen.bell.5688 was a close runner up facing similar conditions to cal_ofthewild along with gilmouradam and his adventures in a cave.

Since February, Yorkshire based bikepacking luggage maker Restrap have been supporting Cycling UK's initiative to get more people outdoors and are providing a prize each month up till December.

Keen bikepacker, Jon Hicken from Restrap explains why they're supporting the initiative, "Restrap wants to inspire people to ride, see great places and have amazing experiences. Bikepacking is a great hobby and a great way to see new places and setting the goal of doing more of it is an ideal excuse to do more of it!"

For March, the best picture submitted will win one of Restrap's super handy Stem Bags (rrp £29.99) - perfect for keeping your vital trail snacks close to hand!

Cycling UK’s Sam Jones undertook the challenge in 2019 and has spent nights out each month so far this 2020 as well. He said:

“The weather has been truly biblical this month, with three named storms each falling on a weekend. Even for the time of year we've still had some cracking - and brave - entries for February's #12nightsoutin1year!

"It's been great to see the pick up so far from the cycling community, who are really embracing the initiative and getting out on their own adventures from Wales to the Peaks to Scotland - makes my windy night out in Normandy pale into comparison! We've another cracking prize from Restrap and have some other great giveaways to announce too for this month's competition so hopefully that should provide a little extra incentive to get out there."

Spending a night out in a strange place might seem a little daunting at first, but once you’ve given it a go, you’ll be hooked!

The charity understands that starting nights out under canvas in February might not be for everyone, and is therefore publishing expert advice throughout the year on how to get the most out of your nights out at www.cyclinguk.org/bikepacking.

From advice on winter bikepacking skills to how to set up tarps, trailside first aid and more, Cycling UK wants to help everyone with a bike and a spirit of adventure the know-how to make their own trips into the unknown.

If that sounds like you, then get involved and share your stories on social media using #12nightsoutin1year.

“Spending a night out in a strange place might seem a little daunting at first,” says Sam. “But once you’ve given it a go, you’ll be hooked!”
