West Calder

Group ride
Description

Wednesday’s ride is to West Calder Community Centre not a church hall.  We can sit at tables to eat our packed lunches and buy a coffee or tea in their café.  It’s a low-key affair and they won’t be able to provide food for all of us , so do bring your own. That’s the first change. The second is a change of leader.  Gordon is sorry he can’t make this ride, so I will lead it instead.

We will meet at Redhall Park at 9.50 am for 10 am departure. https://www.cyclinguk.org/event/dummy-entry-redhall-park

Our route heads along the canal and to Heriot Watt for a toilet stop. Then the usual way via Long Dalmahoy Road, Kirknewton, East Calder to Mid Calder and Dedridge.  Here we will take up the Murieston Trail then back on roads to Harburn and then down to West Calder for lunch. (19 miles)

After lunch we will head back in the direction of Livingston, but when we reach the Simpson Parkway, we will take the cycle path on the opposite side of the road and then negotiate a pedestrian crossing at the junction with the A705.  Then we will continue on the Nell Burn Path to the A89 and turn right into Dechmont.  A wee bit of a climb then a fantastic whizz all the back down to Niddry, Kirkliston and a coffee/tea stop at Conifox.  After this we will head back to Miller and Carter where the ride ends at 40 miles. Here is the route:

We will be on tarmac or hard surfaces for almost all of this ride but take great care where there might be patches of wet leaves or moss making the surface slippery.

Wednesday’s weather currently looks fair but with strong south westerly winds which should help us home after lunch.

Everyone is very welcome to attend but for riders new to the group, our riding guidelines on the following link are essential reading prior to coming out on the ride to ensure safety for yourself and the other riders.  https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/guidelines-safe-riding   You will be expected to join Cycling UK after 3 rides.

Do take note of my phone number in case you get separated from the group. 07974113737 and for new riders, I will collect your details prior to the ride.  If you intend to be a regular rider with us please email icectc.lb@gmail.com with your contact details and a contact number in case of emergency, so that we will have your details available.

Please make sure your bike is roadworthy and that you have 2 spare inner tubes and basic tools to change an inner tube.  Do take note of the weather and dress accordingly! You will need to have water, packed lunch, money for coffee stop and a bike lock.  Remember you are riding at your own risk and whilst the group will always try to help out as best as possible with punctures and mechanical problems, you are responsible for looking after yourself and getting yourself home.

See you Wednesday

Janet.
