Group ride
Description

Cafe lunch stop.

This Sunday’s ride is a figure of 8 in East Lothian with a cafe lunch stop at Archerfield Garden Centre, Dirleton - 43 miles in total.

Please meet at Fisherrow Harbour, Musselburgh at 9.50 AM for a 10 AM start.

We leave Musselburgh alongside the race course and continue along the coast road B1348 but just short of Prestonpans we take the road R up past Prestongrange Mining Museum to join the B1361. The route takes us through the upper part of Prestonpans before going on a cycle path which takes us to Tranent for a WC stop (6 miles). We leave Tranent on the B6371 and then take country roads through New Winton, Boggs Holdings and on to Gladsmuir where we take the cycle lane on the A199 for a couple of miles before turning L signposted Elvingston. The route continues on minor roads through Setonhill and down to Spittal where we join the B1377. We continue along this road to Drem where we turn L and cycle past Fenton Barns en route to the A198 which on turning L shortly leads to the Archerfield turn off. (24 miles). I have booked a table and will confirm the numbers on the day.

After lunch we take the cycle pavement to Gullane where we turn L towards West Fenton (this road may be closed for building works in which case we will join the back road to Aberlady shortly after Gullane) and then skirt round Aberlady on the way to the Ballencrieff roundabout on the B1377. We retrace our steps at this stage for a few miles before making our way back via the level crossing at St. Germains, Cockenzie and Prestonpans. On leaving Prestonpans we will join the John Muir Way for the last 2-3 miles back to Musselburgh.

Here is the route: https://www.strava.com/routes/22518605

All of the route is on tarmac except the 2-3 miles on the John Muir Way which is however suitable for all cycles.

The forecast is for light winds, 8C, light cloud and possible light rain.

Be aware that short sections of the ride are along busy roads with fast traffic. Bring suitable clothing for the predicted weather, 2 spare inner tubes, pump and basic repair kit, good cycle lights, snacks and drinks to keep you going and money for lunch. Please do not forget to check before you start out that your bike is roadworthy, especially the brakes. Always ride safely and in line with the Highway Code. In addition please be aware of and ride in accordance with the group safe riding guidelines at

https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/guidelines-safe-riding

On main or busy roads we must maintain sizeable gaps between groups of 6 or so cyclists and ensure the groups behind know which turning we are taking with the last person in each group stopping and signposting if appropriate.

The group will always do their best to help anyone in mechanical difficulty. However, you are ultimately responsible for looking after yourself and getting yourself home. Please carry emergency contact details both on your person (card in wallet/purse, ICE on mobile) and in your bike bag. I will also compile an attendance sheet. Please take a note of my number in case you get separated form the group: 07786 457 742.

This ride is for members of UK Cycling. If you are not a member you are welcome on this ride although you will be expected to join after being on a maximum of 3 UK Cycling rides.

Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday.
