Chair's Toolkit

What does the Chair of a cycling group do? The duties can vary from group to group but essentially, the Chair ensures that the group runs smoothly and fairly.

What are the main tasks of a cycling group chair?

The duties of a chair may include:

  • presiding at each meeting of the group's committee and at its Annual General Meeting
  • having the casting vote in the event of a tie if a motion is put to the meeting
  • facilitating the efficient and correct conduct of the meeting in accordance with the group's constitution (see the Handbook for Cycling UK Groups for more)
  • deputising for the group's secretary

Note: Some groups use the term president for the role of chair. This is acceptable but a distinction should be made between a president acting as chair and a president appointed for purely honorary/symbolic purposes who has no formal duties.
